Success Stories
Pat Belanger and Flare

My name is Pat Belanger and I live in Taylorsville NC. When my husband and I met I was 19 years old, divorced with two sons. I never had a childhood to speak of. I basically grew up without a mother and father and really never felt the love of a family. Although I have a sister and two brothers, I was only close to my sister. I have never felt worthy of love from anyone. I could express caring and love to others but have always rejected it when returned. I never felt worthy of it. I didn't graduate from high school but did obtain a GED. After my husband and I were married I worked for some time as a nurse's assistant. I then went on to become an LPN, and then an RN. I was proud of that, but it was short-lived. I suffer with low self-esteem and lack of confidence. In January 2006 my doctor took me out of the work force. The job related pressure, alond with severe depression, lack of esteem and confidence, had taken its toll on me. I was hospitalized for a week at that time. I had already been seeing a counselor for a few years. We thought after three or four months I would be able to return to work. That wasn't meant to be. Matters only got worse and I only got more fearful of being around people.

At some time I had a slight stroke, my balance was affected and I have a hard time remembering things unless they are repetitive. I love my dogs because I feel they love me back unconditionally. Unlike people, they don't shun you because you may be suffering from some sort of mental disorder or some other disability. Basically, that's what depression is, a mental disability. I can feel love and confidence with my dog because unlike people I don't feel they are judging me. People are probably not judging me either, I know that, but that isn't the way I feel.

On January 25, 2008, I met Flare, a golden retriever. We bonded right away. He gave me love and a touch of self worth. I truly believe with him at my side I could regain some of my independence and lose some of my fears. I'm looking forward to seeing him again as my service dog. PLEASE HELP partner me with Flare and send a donation to NLMAD.

 THANK YOU!
